Backstab's feature 2hit confirmations, which check for orientation + distance on the first confirm (when you press R1, but not in the 1/2 a second later). On the second confirm, it only looks for distance, and the attacker is even allowed to be hit during this phase and the BS will still go through.

Let's say the enemy you choose to backstab and yourself are facing one another lets call the enemies facing position 6 o'clock, you need to drop your shield and walk to his 1-2 o'clock and immediately STOP and press light attack. It is imparitive that you have your shield down and come to a complete stop to backstab. I cant backstab while locked on, when i am free cam I can backstab just fine, and this isn’t just “oh you’re holding you’re shield up” or “go for an angle” like i have tried everything but I cant backstab??? this made backstab chaining difficult and i want an answer. note: i have seen guides (such as fightincowboy) backstab while locked on and i cant? like it is so weird. dont I'm two hours into the game and I swear I can't pull off one single backsta. I'm using a PS3 controller (Via Motionjoy/DS3Tools, profile set to Xbox controller) and even if I'm right behind the enemy and I hit R1 (RB I guess) my character attacks normally. I've tried with 3 swords and it still doesn't work.

When I'm using Great Weapons they just wait for me to swinging for like two times. And dodging between my swings. Then they're easily going at my back and backstab me. But when I'm trying to do the same then I'm going too far away from them that I can't even reach them to backstab them until they turn. It's same with mobs most of the time.

For Dark Souls III on the PlayStation 4, a GameFAQs message board topic titled "Backstab while 2 handing?". This is a high latency game and I am fine with how Backstabs work. Find another means to punish chuggers if you can. I seem to be able to land Backstabs when I am 100% sure of what the enemy will do and can run to their back with no hesitation. You can't punish the chug with backstab but you can punish many rolling running and free parries.

Sure but in DS1 backstab was such a cheesey and powerful method of crowd control it they needed to do something. You'd run into 3 mobs and just chain backstab them to death. The community was pretty happy with the idea of no invuln frames during the animation. Obviously they changed their minds, but it's harder to backstab now, so it works out.

Unfortunately, I seem to be having an issue where my game will stutter for between .5 - 1 seconds fairly frequently. Seems to be related to either autosave or the game rendering a new area (or, occasionally, something completely unrelated like an enemy death animation or circling around for a backstab triggers it as well).
Once you've done this and understand the foundation, you'll understand when you can safely use r1's, parries, spells, etc. and even how to punish backstab attempts by using these mechanics - as opposed to only being able to stop backstabs by counter backstabbing, which is one of the most basic defences and will not work against good players
This game isn't just as Exciting. It doesn't feel like a proper souls game really. What I really want is Dark Souls 1 with Dark Souls 3 backstab mechanic. Because apart from the ultra abusable backstab system and the rather rubbish net code system Dark Souls was generally my favourite. Could do with optimising though.
